Camp Magruder > Camp Life
Camp Life
Camp Magruder is situated between a freshwater lake and the ocean, and
blessed with pine forest and wetland communities. Smith Lake offers opportunities
for swimming, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, and sometimes even sailing. The
beach is a great place for walks, playing in the sand, and supervised wave jumping.
Campers may also enjoy the Big Swing, donkey rides, nature discovery,
crafts, challenge course and team building activities, archery, and visiting
the tide pools. Our caring staff provides a wonderful and safe environment
for building self-confidence, fostering friendships, and growth in community.
Trail to the Beach
Camp Magruder provides two access trails to the beach. Within 5 minutes of any cabin or lodge, campers can experience the beautiful Oregon coast. The driftwood is plentiful and works perfectly for beach bonfires. Don't forget to bring your camera because you won't want to miss the opportunity to capture one of our pristine coastal sunsets.
Gardens and Landscaping
Although Magruder provides many natural areas of landscaping beauty, there are several "human" created gardens. Roses and daffodils can be found popping up here and there to add color and remind us of spring. In late spring and summer campers can walk through the Sun Garden and eat handfuls of cherry tomatoes, carrots, and sugar peas. The rustic wooden garden benches allow for times of rest and relaxation in a place filled with growth and life.
Wild Animals
Camp Magruder is home to many people and animals alike. During your stay you might encounter families of squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, and several varieties of birds including eagles and the Great Blue Herron. We share a mutual respect for each other and our stay here at camp, but keep a close eye on your lunch - some animals have been known to steal a bite once in a while.
Outdoor Chapels
There are a number of possibilities for outdoor meditation and worship services. You can chose from a natural setting such as Moss Chapel (a natural amphitheater in the woods), the Meditation Patio, or a bench seating area like our Lakeside Chapel.
Lakeside Chapel can accommodate up to 150 people.
Campfire Circles
It wouldn't be camp without a traditional campfire. Campers and guests can share music, songs, skits and storytelling around a blazing fire. Spend some time with friends and family around the campfire and be sure to bring marshmallows for roasting.
The main campfire circle will hold up to 175 people. There are five other
smaller fire circles around camp.
